Raising a Puppy Who Loves Grooming

Because confident puppies become confident adult dogs.

At The Dapper Dog Grooming & Spa, we believe the best grooming dogs aren't born - they're made through hundreds of positive experiences.

This isn't a one-week challenge that you complete once and forget. Instead, think of it as your puppy's weekly homework.

We recommend working through these exercises every week throughout your Puppy Intro Program and continuing to practise at home until your puppy can confidently complete every activity on the Graduation Checklist.

Spend just 5–10 minutes each day focusing on the exercises listed for that day.

Some puppies will progress quickly. Others may need a little longer—and that's completely normal.

The goal isn't speed.

The goal is confidence.

Before You Begin

To give your puppy the best chance of success, remember these simple Fear Free principles:

✅ Keep each session short (5–10 minutes).

✅ Use soft, high-value treats your puppy absolutely loves.

✅ Let your puppy choose to participate.

✅ If they walk away, let them.

✅ Never force or restrain your puppy.

✅ Reward calm, relaxed behaviour—not just participation.

✅ Finish every session while your puppy is still having fun.

💙 Dapper Dog Tip

Watch your puppy's body language throughout every exercise.

Signs your puppy is relaxed include:

  • Soft eyes

  • Loose muscles

  • Relaxed ears

  • A gently wagging tail

  • Choosing to stay with you

If your puppy freezes, yawns repeatedly, licks their lips, turns away, tucks their tail or tries to escape, they're telling you the exercise has become too difficult.

Simply take a step back and make it easier next time.

Remember—confidence grows when puppies feel safe.

🗓 Day 1 — Standing Like a Grooming Superstar

Professional groomers can only produce beautiful, safe haircuts when a dog is standing comfortably.

Many puppies naturally want to sit, wriggle or lean against the groomer. While completely normal, these habits make grooming much more difficult.

Today's goal is simply teaching your puppy that standing still earns wonderful rewards.

✔ Exercise 1 — Standing Practice

Ask your puppy to stand naturally.

The moment they remain standing, reward them.

Start with just three seconds before rewarding.

Gradually build towards ten seconds over several sessions.

If they sit, simply encourage them back into a standing position without saying "No."

Reward success—not mistakes.

Goal

✔ Calmly stand for 10 seconds.

✔ Exercise 2 — Rear Leg Positioning

One area many owners forget to practise is gentle rear leg handling.

During professional grooming, your groomer will carefully move each back leg slightly out to the side to safely clip the hygiene area.

This movement feels unusual for puppies, so introducing it gradually at home makes a huge difference.

Support your puppy underneath the hock (ankle) and gently guide the leg only a small distance away from the body before placing it back down.

Keep movements slow and gentle.

Never pull or force the leg into position.

Goal

✔ Your puppy calmly accepts gentle rear leg positioning.

For today's exercises you'll simply need:

• High-value training treats

• A non-slip surface

• Plenty of patience

🗓 Day 2 — Face Confidence

The face is one of the most sensitive areas on any dog.

Professional groomers need to safely hold a dog's head while trimming around the eyes, muzzle and beard.

The more comfortable your puppy becomes with gentle facial handling now, the easier every future groom will be.

✔ Exercise 3 — The Chin Hold

Instead of holding underneath your puppy's jaw or lips, gently hold only the fur underneath the chin.

Use almost no pressure. If your puppy pulls away...Simply let go. Never hold on tighter. Never pull against them. When they choose to remain still, reward immediately.

Goal

✔ Calm acceptance of a gentle chin hold.

✔ Exercise 4 — The "C Hold"

Puppies often dislike having the top of their muzzle touched.

Using one hand, create a loose "C" shape with your thumb and fingers. Rest this gently over the very top of your puppy's muzzle.

Do not squeeze.

Do not restrain.

Simply allow your puppy to experience the feeling before rewarding.

Over time they'll learn that having their muzzle handled isn't scary at all.

Goal

✔ Relax while their muzzle is gently supported.

💙 Dapper Dog Tip

Never reward your puppy for pulling away.

Instead, reward the moment they choose to remain still—even if it's only for one second.

Tiny successes build lifelong confidence.

🐾 Day 3 – Ear Confidence

Many puppies are sensitive about their ears.

During grooming, your dog's ears may need to be checked, brushed, combed and, for some breeds, excess hair may be removed from the entrance of the ear canal to improve ventilation.

Introducing gentle handling now makes future ear care much less stressful.

✔ Exercise 5 — Ear Handling

Lift each ear flap.

Have a gentle look inside.

Lightly massage the outside of the ear.

Then gently touch around the entrance to the ear canal using your fingertip.

This isn't about cleaning ears.

It's simply teaching your puppy that having their ears handled is perfectly normal.

Goal

✔ Relax while each ear is gently handled.

✔ Exercise 6 — Introducing Grooming Sounds

Professional clippers make an unusual buzzing noise that many puppies have never heard before.

Rather than introducing this sound during their first groom, you can begin creating positive associations at home.

Switch on one of the following:

  • Human beard or body trimmer

  • Electric toothbrush

  • Battery-powered trimmer

Start several metres away.

Feed delicious treats while the buzzing continues.

Over several sessions, slowly move closer.

Eventually, you should be able to comfortably walk all the way around your puppy while the device is switched on.

If your puppy chooses to walk away, that's okay.

Allow them to.

They simply don't receive treats until they choose to come back and remain relaxed.

Goal

✔ Stay calm while hearing buzzing sounds nearby..

🗓 Day 4 – Clipper Confidence

Professional clippers don't just make noise—they vibrate too. For many puppies, the vibration is actually more surprising than the sound.

Today's exercises introduce both sensations gradually so your puppy learns they predict good things.

✔ Exercise 7 – Clippers Around the Body (Noise Only)

Turn on a human trimmer, electric toothbrush or battery-operated trimmer.

Do not touch your puppy yet.

Simply walk around your puppy with the buzzing device switched on while feeding high-value treats.

Move around every part of their body, including:

  • Head

  • Around the ears

  • Neck

  • Shoulders

  • Back

  • Chest

  • Legs

  • Tummy

  • Under the tail

  • Hygiene area

The aim is for your puppy to think, "When I hear this sound, yummy treats appear!"

If they choose to walk away, let them. Never follow or force them back. Simply wait until they return and reward them for choosing to stay.

Goal

✔ My puppy remains relaxed while a buzzing device moves around their entire body.

✔ Exercise 8 – Feeling the Vibration

Once your puppy is completely comfortable with the sound, it's time to introduce the feeling.

Using the blunt back (non-cutting end) of one of the following:

  • Human trimmer

  • Electric toothbrush

  • Kmart Mini Massager

Gently touch your puppy for just one or two seconds before rewarding.

Work slowly around the body before progressing to more sensitive areas.

Practise on:

  • Neck

  • Shoulders

  • Chest

  • Back

  • Front legs

  • Rear legs

  • Paw pads

  • Tummy

  • Groin

  • Around the hygiene area

  • Under the tail

Paw pads and hygiene areas are often the last places puppies become comfortable with vibration, so don't rush these.

If your puppy moves away, that's perfectly okay.

Reward them every time they choose to stay relaxed.

Goal

✔ My puppy calmly accepts gentle vibration over their whole body.

💙 Dapper Dog Tip

Many owners wait until the first groom to introduce clippers.

Instead, think of clipper sounds and vibration as just another everyday household noise. The more familiar they become at home, the less exciting they are in the salon.

🗓 Day 5 – Feet & Sensitive Areas

Professional groomers need to safely handle every part of your puppy—including areas that many puppies naturally find sensitive.

Today's goal is to build confidence through gentle handling and positive reinforcement.

✔ Exercise 9 – Paw Handling

Gently practise:

  • Holding each paw

  • Separating the toes

  • Touching every nail

  • Rubbing between the paw pads

  • Lightly squeezing each paw

These exercises prepare your puppy for nail trimming, foot clipping and paw pad maintenance.

Goal

✔ My puppy willingly allows all four paws to be handled.

✔ Exercise 10 – Tummy & Hygiene Handling

Your groomer will eventually need to clip underneath your puppy for hygiene and comfort.

Practise gently touching:

  • Chest

  • Tummy

  • Groin

  • Inside the rear legs

  • Around the hygiene area

  • Under the tail

Once your puppy is comfortable with handling alone, repeat yesterday's vibration exercise using your trimmer, electric toothbrush or mini massager on these same areas.

Never rush.

These are often the most sensitive parts of the body.

Goal

✔ My puppy remains relaxed while these sensitive areas are gently handled and introduced to vibration.

🗓 Day 6 – Grooming Tools

Today's exercises introduce two of the most common grooming tools your puppy will experience throughout their life.

✔ Exercise 11 – Scissor Sounds

Many puppies are startled by the sound of scissors opening and closing.

Sit beside your puppy and make gentle snipping sounds several feet away.

Reward every calm response.

Over multiple sessions, slowly decrease the distance.

⚠️ Safety First

Never wave scissors near your puppy's face or body. Puppies move unpredictably, so always keep scissors well out of reach.

Goal

✔ My puppy stays relaxed while hearing scissors snip nearby.

✔ Exercise 12 – Brush & Comb Practice

Now it's time to put everything together.

Using an Artero Protected Pin Slicker Brush, gently brush your puppy in the direction of coat growth.

Keep brushing sessions short and rewarding.

After brushing, use an Artero Nature Collection Short Pin Comb to gently check your work.

The comb should glide easily through the coat without catching.

If it catches, return to the brush before trying again.

Remember—the goal isn't a perfect groom.

It's helping your puppy love the experience.

Goal

✔ My puppy enjoys both brushing and combing.

💙 Dapper Dog Tip

Finish every grooming practice session with something your puppy loves—a game, cuddle, meal or special chew.

This creates a powerful positive memory that they'll carry into their next grooming session.

🗓 Day 7 – Confidence Day

Today isn't about teaching anything new.

It's about celebrating everything your puppy has learned.

Spend five minutes revisiting the week's exercises.

Keep everything light, fun and rewarding

.

Confidence grows through repetition—not perfection.

Even if your puppy only manages a few seconds of each exercise, that's progress worth celebrating.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I practise?

Aim for 5–10 minutes each day, repeating the full Puppy Confidence Checklist every week throughout your Puppy Intro Program.

What if my puppy doesn't like an exercise?

That's okay! Simply make it easier, increase the distance or shorten the duration. Never force your puppy to continue. Confidence grows through positive experiences, not pressure.

My puppy walks away. Should I stop them?

No. Allow your puppy to leave if they choose. Give them the opportunity to return on their own. Reward them when they choose to stay and engage calmly.

What if my puppy isn't food motivated?

Food is often the easiest way to create positive associations, but it's not the only reward your puppy may value.

If your puppy isn't interested in treats, first ask yourself why. Are they:

  • Full from a recent meal?

  • Feeling tired or overstimulated?

  • Worried about the exercise?

  • Being offered treats that aren't exciting enough?

Try practising before mealtimes when your puppy is a little hungrier, and experiment with higher-value rewards such as cooked chicken, roast beef, cheese or another favourite food.

If your puppy still isn't interested in food, use something they do enjoy instead. Rewards can include:

  • Praise and gentle affection (if your puppy enjoys being touched)

  • A favourite toy or short game of tug

  • Chasing a ball

  • Sniffing around the garden

  • Going for a walk

  • Being released to do something they enjoy

The key is to reward your puppy with something they genuinely find valuable.

If your puppy refuses even their favourite treats and seems worried, don't continue with the exercise. Take a break and make the activity easier next time. Your puppy's emotional wellbeing should always come first.

💙 Dapper Dog Tip: A puppy who won't take even their favourite treat is often telling you they're feeling overwhelmed. This is valuable feedback. Rather than pushing on, reduce the difficulty of the exercise and help them succeed with smaller, easier steps.

What if my puppy seems scared?

If your puppy freezes, turns away, repeatedly licks their lips, yawns, tucks their tail or tries to leave, they're communicating that they're uncomfortable.

Don't force them to continue. Instead:

  • Stop the exercise and give your puppy a break.

  • Return to an easier version next time (for example, increase the distance from the buzzing clippers or shorten the duration of handling).

  • Reward every small sign of confidence.

Confidence is built through hundreds of successful experiences—not by pushing through fear. Every puppy progresses at their own pace, and that's perfectly okay.

When should I stop using the checklist?

Once your puppy can confidently complete every item on the Graduation Checklist. Even then, it's a great idea to revisit the exercises occasionally to maintain your puppy's confidence.
