Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but the first grooming session can be a bit overwhelming for both you and your furry friend. Grooming is essential for your puppy’s health and comfort, but it requires preparation to make the experience positive and stress-free. Getting ready for your puppy’s first groom sets the tone for future visits and helps your puppy feel safe and relaxed.
Here’s a practical guide with clear steps to prepare your puppy for their first grooming appointment.
Choose the Right Groomer
Finding a groomer who is experienced with puppies is key. Puppies need gentle handling and patience. Look for groomers who:
Have good reviews mentioning puppy care
Use positive reinforcement techniques like Fear Free Grooming
Offer a calm and quiet environment
Visit the grooming salon beforehand if possible. This helps your puppy get familiar with the sights and sounds, reducing anxiety on the actual day. At The Dapper Dog Grooming & Spa, we call it a "meet and treat"! If they are unvaccinated, please keep them in your arms.
Start Grooming at Home Early
Before the first professional groom, introduce your puppy to basic grooming at home. This includes:
Getting some advice about the right brush for you puppy. We recommend the combination of the Artero Nature Collection Protected Pin Slicker Brush and the Artero Nature Collection Short Pin Comb
Brush their coat daily for no more than a couple of minutes to get them used to the sensation. If this is too much, start with the reverse side of the brush (smooth side) and treat during the process.
Gently handle their paws, muzzle, ears, and tail to prepare for professional handling
Lifting their lips slightly
Lift their paws slightly off the ground and then put them straight back down again
Practice a loose and gentle muzzle hold that they can escape easily (repetition is the key, we never want to force our pups to do anything against their will)
Short, positive sessions work best. Reward your puppy with treats and praise to build a good association with grooming.
Schedule the First Groom at the Right Age
We recommend the first professional grooming session when your puppy is around 12 - 15 weeks old. By this time, puppies have had their initial vaccinations and can safely visit public places. Check with your vet to confirm the best timing.
Prepare Your Puppy Physically and Mentally
On the day of the groom, make sure your puppy is calm and comfortable:
Make sure you have done lots of handling training before their first groom
On the day, take your puppy for a walk to burn off excess energy and allow them to toilet
Avoid feeding a large meal right before the appointment to prevent discomfort
If your puppy shows signs of stress, talk to the groomer about ways to help, such as breaks or gentle handling techniques.
Pack Essential Items for the Groomer
Bring along items that can help create a safe and positive experience for your puppy:
Understand What to Expect During the the first groom
Knowing the grooming process helps you prepare your puppy and yourself. A typical puppy groom includes:
Bathing with puppy safe products, we use Melanie Newman Salon Essentials Puppy Shampoo and Conditioner
Drying with towels or a gentle dryer
Removing small tangles
Nail trimming
Trimming around the face, paws and hygiene areas
The groomer will work at a pace suitable for your puppy’s comfort.
Keep Calm and Positive
Your puppy can pick up on your emotions. Stay calm and cheerful before and during the grooming session. Use encouraging words and avoid showing frustration if your puppy resists. Positive energy helps your puppy feel safe. We encourage our owners to stay for the first and potentially 2nd groom.
3-4 weekly grooming appointments
We recommend booking your puppy's first three grooming appointments approximately three to four weeks apart. Regular monthly visits during this important learning stage help your puppy build confidence, become comfortable with the grooming process, and develop positive associations with being handled. It also allows us to gradually introduce each step of grooming at your puppy's pace, setting them up for a lifetime of calm, stress-free salon visits.
